European companies get ahead on labeling
With Britain’s Food Standards Agency expected to recommend a “traffic light” system to indicate levels of fat, saturated fat, salt, and sugar in nutrition labeling copy, several major food companies are instituting a nutrition labeling system of their own, based on guideline daily allowance (GDA) information for key nutrients.

FDA has proposed to require food and cosmetic labels to list the presence of cochineal extract and carmine, two widely used red dyes extracted from insects.

Bottled water under fire
Environmentalists are taking aim at the $9 billion bottled water industry, which has enjoyed nearly double-digit growth for the past 10 years. The Earth Policy Institute, a Washington, DC-based environmental group, published a research study critical of bottled water for producing unnecessary garbage and using vast quantities of energy in bottle production and packaging and transport of the product.

EU deregulates package sizes
The European Parliament deregulated package sizes for most pre-packaged products, except for staple beverages and foods. Manufacturers and retailers will be able to sell deregulated products in customized containers rather than in sizes mandated by member states or EU laws.
