California container law expansion?

Bills to expand California's beverage container redemption value law are under consideration by committees in the state legislature. Expansion efforts are aimed at containers of other beverage types, such as teas, coffees, sports drinks and juices.

The law currently applies only to beer and soft drinks. An expected comprehensive reform of the law appears in jeopardy, so supporters of expansion are eyeing legislation to postpone expiration of handling and processing fee provisions, which sunset on December 31, 1998, as a vehicle to achieve their goals.
