USDA redoing Food Pyramid

USDA is seeking public comment on proposed revisions to the daily intake patterns that form the basis for its Food Guide Pyramid, a graphic representation of USDA’s recommendations for how much of each food group people should eat daily.

The pyramid was developed in 1992, and USDA is proposing to update daily food intake patterns to reflect new nutritional standards.

Specifically, USDA is asking for comments on

• what and how much the pyramid suggests

eating;

• energy levels for proposed eating patterns, particularly the “appropriateness of using sedentary, reference-sized individuals in assigning target calorie levels for assessing the nutritional adequacy” of each eating pattern;

• nutritional goals for proposed eating patterns; and

• using “cups” and “ounces” instead of “servings” in consumer materials to suggest daily amounts in each food group.
