S√ľdpack Medica‚Äôs PharmaGuard recyclable film concept for blister packaging for solid applications has received the German Packaging Award in the ‚Äúsustainability/recyclability‚ÄĚ category. Based on recyclable mono-materials, the solution stands out due to its greater material efficiency and reduced carbon footprint.

The PharmaGuard PP-based and recyclable film concept for blister packaging has already been launched on the market. The base and lidding films produced in an innovative coextrusion process feature an array of characteristics, including high transparency and barrier functionality.

‚ÄúWhat is worth particular mention is the excellent water vapor barrier thanks to having PP as the base material,‚ÄĚ says Valeska Haux, vice president of strategic marketing. The matched films offer top sealing performance, which is reflected by maximum process reliability and packaging quality.

A lifecycle assessment conducted by Sphera has proven that the packaging concept is associated with a reduced climate impact (in CO2-eq) of up to 47%, as well as lower energy and water consumption compared to other commonly used PVC/PVdC and aluminum blister solutions.

PharmaGuard impressed the jury ‚Äúwith its use of PP as a successful alternative to conventional, non-recyclable blister packaging, making it a recyclable packaging solution. The very good shaping of the cavities of the blister and the balanced PP-based covering film, which showed a clear functionality, are particularly noteworthy in this development.‚ÄĚ

The S√ľdpack and S√ľdpack Medica teams accepted the award on September 13, during the traditional ceremony in Berlin. At the 46th German Packaging Award ceremony, a total of 34 innovations from Germany, England, the Netherlands, and Austria were distinguished this year.
