■ New workshops are being offered to educate suppliers on Wal-Mart’s Sustainable Packaging Scorecard. The classes aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of proper scorecard use with scorecard calculation demonstrations, efficient package input and cube utilization, category comparisons, and explanations
on how package scores can affect purchasing decisions. Efficient Collaborative Retail Marketing and MARSpkg developed the workshops.

■ First Look Studios is reducing its environmental impact through an agreement with Shorewood Packaging. The goal of the collaboration is to support a tree planting program that will offset emissions generated by the manufacture of one million DVD packages.

■ GREENBOX for the pharmaceutical industry is being billed as the first-of-its-kind temperature-management shipping system capable of maintaining narrow temperature ranges for extended durations of time—up to 120+ hours or five days—regardless of external environmental conditions. Entropy Solutions, Inc., says the new product is the industry’s first and only completely sustainable thermal packaging system, created with 100 percent recyclable, organic-based, non-toxic, and fully biodegradable components.

■ Target Corporation has agreed to systematically reduce its use of PVC. The company is reducing PVC found in many of its branded products, including infant products, children’s toys, shower curtains, packaging, and fashion accessories.

■ The Glass Packaging Institute kicked off the 18th year of the Clear Choice Awards, which recognizes the contribution glass packaging makes to the image, marketability, sustainability, and success of food, beverage, and cosmetic products. To enter, participants should visit www.gpi.org and fill out an E-Call for Entries form. Winners will receive an all expenses paid trip to Las Vegas to attend the Clear Choice Awards presentation during the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) Show 2008, May 4-7.
