Farmers have always been faced with a dilemma. It is easier to sell their produce to a supermarket chain, but they earn less. It is far more profitable to take their harvest directly to the consumer, but it is terribly time consuming.

One farmer in Germany, Peter-und-Paul-Hof first encouraged customers to come directly to the farm and collect fresh milk from refrigerators to save on delivery charges.

This concept eventually evolved into placing Regiomat vending machines around town, giving locals a 24-hour farmer’s market.

The article, on the web site Springwise (a network of 8,000 spotters scanning the globe for smart business ideas) says, “By cutting out the middleman, this system also offers potential savings over retail stores. An update to the traditional farm stand that is beneficial to both farmers and local-loving consumers, this is definitely a concept we can see spreading to other parts of the world.”
