Three out of four of the 801 Americans polled in the random survey said they would be more aware of the warning message if it were easier to read. The study concluded that the major barrier to the effectiveness of health warning statements is that they are not noticeable. Drinkers said they are too small, are not prominently located on containers, and do not stand out on the bottle or can. Some 88% of drinkers thought having warning labels printed in red or black type on a white background and surrounded by a lined border would make them more noticeable and readable. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has solicited public comment on what, if any, changes should be made to the warning label.
