PELV wrap-up

Lots of modular machines, greater use of servos, and a broader use of stand-up pouches than ever before--these are among the trends observed by Packaging World editors who attended last week's Pack Expo Las Vegas.

Sponsored by the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute, the biennial show attracted a Pack Expo Las Vegas record 18굑 visitors. According to PMMI, that's 17% above the previous record. PMMI also reports that the number of exhibiting companies was 933 (up from 872 in 2001) and conference participants numbered 947 (up from 434 in 2001).

Of particular note, says PMMI president Chuck Yuska, was the significant increase in international attendance. This year's show achieved a 50% increase in international attendance, with 3걑 packaging professionals from 79 different countries attending. "With 17% of the attendance coming from outside of the United States, it's clear that Pack Expo Las Vegas has become an international event," says Yuska.

A highlight of this year's three-day show for the Packaging World family was the induction of vp/executive editor Arnie Orlsoki, Jr., into the Packaging Education Forum Packaging Hall of Fame. Photo 2 shows Packaging World publisher Joe Angel with Arnie Orloski shortly after Orloski delivered his acceptance speech at the October 13 Hall of Fame ceremonies.

Sprinkled across Packworld.com over the next week or so will be additional highlights from the show, including video footage of machinery in action.
