'Full-panel' reseal realizes gold

Reseal options give companies more ways for providing consumers with added package convenience. One new technology, which adapts the entire front of a package into a recloseable panel, has been recognized with gold-level honors in packaging excellence by FPA judges.

Pw 7343 Daniele Delizia

Pascoag, RI-based Daniele, Inc.’s launch of Delizia brand presliced meats in 3-oz packs is one of the first applications for Printpack’s Re-Seal It® reclosure. Through an added label, essentially the entire front panel opens and recloses for full, convenient access for users.

A special Re-Seal It applicating system added to Daniele’s thermoforming operations first “touch cuts” the lidstock, over which is applied the Re-Seal It label. The lidstock is not cut through, but rather perforated. The lidding is a 9-color reverse-printed gravure lamination of 48-gauge polyester with barrier sealant.

The Re-Seal It label is a clear, high-gloss 2-mil biaxially oriented polypropylene. It’s reverse-printed flexographically in two colors with “open here” identification.

This combined substrate is then indexed, applied and heat-sealed as usual over the forming web after the meat has been added. The semi-rigid forming film is Printpack’s Neobar, a 17-mil barrier coextruded amorphous PET (APET).
The label is oversized compared to the die-cut area of the lidding film, providing about a 3⁄4-in. band of pressure-sensitive adhesive around the die-cut perimeter to effect the reseal. When the label is lifted, the perforated section lifts with it.

The products were launched in fall 2007 in the New York metro area and into East Coast regional chains. The line contains four varieties of cured meats such as prosciutto ham. The end user declined to provide comment for this article.
