In Thailand, garbage is out of control...

Garbage from packaging is a serious environmental problem in Thailand, according to its Pollution Control Department (PCD).

Most of the garbage is treated improperly by open dumpsites. Landfill shortages are also to blame. Therefore, recycling is seen as the best way to manage the problem. While a Packaging Management Bill has yet to be approved, private sector progress is being made. Manufacturers are beginning to use 100 percent recyclable packaging for their products. One packaging manufacturer, Tetra Pak (Thai)—the largest packaging producer for drinks in Thailand—is not only launching 100 percent recyclable products, but has also kicked off several recycling campaigns, and sends waste from factories using their packages directly to recycling facilities. Schools and retailers are being recruited to join in the recycling efforts.
