Nanotechnology goes on unregulated...

While consumers may fear the rise in nanotechnology in products such as sunscreen, toothpaste, and shampoo, the FDA contends there are no safety issues.

Consumer groups and others say that the tiny particles are unpredictable and could be toxic. But an FDA spokesperson said, "We believe we do not have scientific evidence about nano-sized materials posing safety questions that merit being mentioned on the label." Many products (cosmetics, foods, and dietary supplements) are not subject to FDA oversight. Producing them with nanotechnology adds another layer of concern.
