Cannabis tin is child-resistant

This California marketer of cannabis pouches that are placed between the cheek and gum like chewing tobacco is among the first to take advantage of a new child-resistant tin.

Based in Humboldt, CA, Cannadips first went to market with its cannabis-infused and CBD-infused products using what co-founder Case Mandel describes as “beautiful embossed tins that exuded the quality and craft of our product. But then,” he continues, “California changed the regulations and made child-resistant packaging a requirement. So we had the same tin supplier design a child-resistant tin, which has essentially the same look as its predecessor. So we were able to go back on the market with our amazing product in an amazing child-resistant tin, and it’s just been a smash hit.”

The tin supplier Mandel refers to is Holland’s CM Packaging, which partnered closely with Switzerland’s Hoffmann Neopac in the developmentand and sales of this package. Hoffmann Neopac, in fact, is the designer of the new container, which consists of four main components. The top and bottom are tin-plate steel. But pressed into both top and bottom is an injection molded-polypropylene insert. “The inserts are threaded, so it works a lot like the packaging you see in pharmaceutical applications,” says Mandel. “Only by pushing down and then turning can you open the package, and that’s what makes it child-resistant.”

The tin, say its makers, is certified according to the Code of Federal Regulations 16 CFR§1,700.20.Go here and scroll down for an animation showing how the package works.

The tin used by Cannadips is 70 mm in dia and stands 19.3 mm tall (2.75 x 0.75 in.). Cannadips offers its products 20 per tin or in a “microdose” version 15 per tin. Graphics are offset printed. For highlights, the logo and design lines are embossed.
