Canada rejects country-of-origin labeling

In mid-March, Michael Kergin, the Canadian Ambassador to the United States, sent a letter to the chairmen and ranking minority members of the Senate and House agriculture committees expressing Canada’s opposition to country of origin labeling provisions contained in the U.

S. farm bill. Such labeling “would not address food safety,” he said, but rather would “interfere with the growing integration of the North American cattle/beef and hog/pork industries, to the detriment of producers in both of our countries.” Copies of the letter were sent to U.S. Ambassador to Canada Robert Zoellick, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman, and Commerce Secretary Don Evans.
