Ground beef labeling

Packages of ground beef at two leading supermarket chains, Wegman's Food Markets of Rochester, NY, and Giant Food Inc. of metropolitan Washington, DC, now sport a bright, new red and yellow label advising consumers to cook the meat to a temperature of 160°F.

The package labels are part of a multi-media promotion developed in cooperation with USDA to make the public aware that merely cooking ground beef until it is brown is no guarantee of killing the dangerous E. coli 0157 pathogen. The safe handling instructions label required by USDA on ground beef packages does not mention temperature.
