Irradiation labeling

FDA is taking too long to issue its final changes in labeling requirements for irradiated foods, complained the National Food Processors Assn. (NFPA) in testimony before the House Commerce Committee in October.

The FDA Modernization Act of 1997 gave the agency 12 months after enactment to issue the regulations, making the deadline the end of November. Separately, in the November elections, voters in Hawaii decided to allow construction of a food irradiation facility for treating fruit.
