Henney to head FDA

Dr. Jane E. Henney, vice president for health sciences at the University of New Mexico, has been nominated as the new commissioner of the FDA, succeeding her former boss Dr.

David Kessler, who left the agency more than a year ago. Henney served as deputy commissioner from 1992-1994, and had a leading role in the implementation of the popular prescription drug user fee program. She has less experience in food-related issues, but the major food trade associations said they looked forward to explaining their priorities. Among them is labeling uniformity. FDA also will develop and implement the regulations for any food safety legislation now being considered by Congress, as well as oversee implementation of last year's FDA reform bill.
