Drug labeling for the elderly

The Alliance for Aging Research, an umbrella organization for geriatrics-related study groups, has recommended that the Department of Health and Human Services develop a list of medications that are "potentially inappropriate for use in older persons" and another "red alert" list of medications that rarely, if ever, should be used with the elderly.

The group recommended labeling changes for all over-the-counter medications to require the addition of a new subsection in the Precautions section titled "For Use by Older Persons." It would contain information on recommended use--or nonuse--by the elderly.
