Labeling uniformity

The Grocery Manufacturers of America (GMA) is crafting a message it plans to take to Capitol Hill renewing its call for uniform national food labeling standards.

When Congress failed to incorporate such uniformity in last year's comprehensive FDA modernization bill, several Congressional leaders indicated they would be willing to revisit the issue this session. Sen. Jim Jeffords (R-VT), chairman of the Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee, said he would schedule hearings on labeling uniformity. Action in the House is likely to center on the Commerce Committee, where Chairman Tom Bliley (R-VA), among others, has been sympathetic to the food industry's longstanding efforts. Lack of uniform labeling standards is an ongoing headache for manufacturers, who often must deal with differing state requirements. c
