* According to Reuter's news service, leading U.K. retailer Marks and Spencer will spend more than $390 million over the next five years to make sure its packaging and clothing will be biodegradable or compostable and that none of its waste will be dumped in landfill sites. The company said it will label all products on its grocery shelves that have been flown in from growers and will begin a trial using food waste to power its stores—aiming to become carbon neutral by 2012. There is no question that throughout the past year sustainability was a dominant theme in the U.S. packaging arena. After many years of limited progress in truly addressing the issues of the environmental impact of packaging materials, a number of consumer product companies and retailers, led by Wal-Mart, have started to take concrete steps to do something about it. We applaud this effort. It’s driven by the concept of sustainability in its entirety, which goes well beyond packaging.

Innovia's NatureFlex films, made from cellulose derived from wood pulp, can be used for packaging fresh foods. In addition to being biodegradable, the film is also compostable. It provides improved dimensional stability under chill conditions, the company claims.
