FDA attacks misbranded dairy labeling

The Food and Drug Administration told four manufacturers of whole milk, reduced fat milk, and ice cream to remove the false label statements, "No Hormones" or "Hormone Free" from their packaging.

These are false claims, said FDA, because all milk contains naturally occurring hormones, and the products cannot be processed to render them hormone-free. In warning letters to each company, the agency said it could take further action such as seizure and injunction unless the labels were promptly corrected. Manufacturers do have the option of stating on the label that the product is free from milk from cows treated with rBST, if the statements are true and not misleading.
