Egg carton labeling

As part of a new initiative to ensure the food safety of fresh eggs, the Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture proposed to require safe handling labels on egg cartons.

Labels would also emphasize the necessity of storing the eggs at cool temperatures (no higher than 45°F) in the home and at retail and foodservice venues. Federal officials stressed they are taking a farm-to-table approach to decrease the food-safety risks associated with fresh eggs, primarily salmonella enteritis. FDA regulates fresh eggs, while USDA regulates egg products.
