Splendid news for Splenda

The Food and Drug Administration is proposing to amend its rules on health claims for sweeteners and tooth decay to include sucralose, currently marketed under the tradename Splenda.

Like other sweeteners currently authorized to make a health claim, the agency has concluded that sucralose does not promote dental cavities. McNeil Nutritionals, which markets the sugar alternative Splenda in the U.S., had petitioned FDA to allow the health claim. Comments must be submitted to FDA by July 27, 2005.
