In response to the OWG report, FDA also issued an advance notice of proposed rulemaking asking for comment on whether to amend the nutrition panel regulations governing serving size.

Surveys indicated that many consumers mistakenly believe the serving size listed on food packages is the amount recommended for consumption.

In addition, many consumers say the serving size is often unrealistic. Some consumers complained that what appear to be single-serving packages declare two or more servings on the nutrition panel. The agency is asking for comment on how the serving size listing can or should be changed to help consumers make better decisions about food consumption and whether or not these changes might lead to repackaging.
