Heineken rolls out 'keg' can

Appearing on store shelves across the U.S. beginning in April is a promotional can from Heineken USA, White Plains, NY, in the shape of a keg. The can, first tested in the New York area late last year, is made in Europe by Crown Cork & Seal (Philadelphia, PA).

The cans are reportedly "blow-molded" using technology from Sidel (Norcross, GA), but this couldn't be confirmed at press time.

Heineken wouldn't comment on economics or pricing, except to acknowledge that the 12-oz keg can does contain more aluminum than the brewer's standard 12-oz can. A spokesperson for the brewer said "standard can colors and printing" were used and that some "dimensional changes" were required on the filling lines. The promotion is expected to last through the summer selling season, ending around August.
