5 Hand Sanitizers the FDA Doesn’t Want You Using

The hand sanitizer products tested positive for a toxic chemical.

A recent CNN article discussed the latest products added to the FDA’s list of products that tested positive for methanol, which can be toxic. The discovery comes just two weeks after the agency named nine hand sanitizers, manufactured in Mexico by Eskbiochem SA, that tested positive for the toxic chemical. Exposure to high amounts of methanol, whether absorbed through the skin or ingested, can cause nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or even death. The five hand sanitizers added to the FDA’s list are:

  • Grupo Insoma's Hand Sanitizer Gel Unscented, 70% alcohol
  • Transliquid Technologies' Mystic Shield Protection Hand Sanitizer
  • Soluciones Cosmeticas' Bersih Hand Sanitizer Gel Fragrance Free
  • Soluciones Cosmeticas Antiseptic Alcohol 70% Topical Solution Hand Sanitizer
  • Tropicosmeticos' Britz Hand Sanitizer Ethyl Alcohol 70%
