The case for glass

One of the fascinating things about that ever-so-popular subject known as “sustainable packaging” is how contradictory peoples’ views can be. For example, while Boisset and the Liquor Control Board of Ontario are convinced that glass is considerably less “green” than PET, aluminum, or paper/foil laminations, McCormick Distillery disagrees.

The Weston, MO, distillery recently announced that its new glass container for its super premium 360 Vodka grew directly out of “the company’s decision to integrate environmental sustainability into its product line.” They’ve even set up a new division, Earth Friendly Distilling Co., and they’re referring to 360 Vodka as “the world’s first eco-friendly premium spirit.” Wait, there’s more: “The introduction and rollout of 360 Vodka establishes a new paradigm in the distilled spirits industry, which is built around a complete philosophy and commitment to eco-awareness throughout the product development and packaging process.”

The bottle, notes Earth Friendly Distilling Co., is made from 85% recycled glass. The firm has also announced plans to support eco-friendly “green” organizations dedicated to the betterment of our environment though its “360 Close the Loop” campaign, whereby the company will donate up to $1.00 to select organizations for every bottle cap that is returned to the distillery
