P&G moisturizer sold in RPET

A clear clamshell made of recycled polyethylene terephthalate helps showcase the newest Oil of Olay® moisturizer from Cincinnati-based Procter & Gamble. Thermoformed by Creative Forming (Ripon, WI), the clamshell recently earned an award in the Roll-fed/Consumer Housewares category in the 11th annual thermoforming competition sponsored by the Society of Plastics Engineers.

Unlike other Oil of Olay products that typically retail in the $7 to $12 range, this 50-mL (1.7-oz) jar of moisturizer is formulated from more costly ingredients and has a suggested retail price of $20. Available nationwide in drug stores and mass merchandisers, it represents an attempt on P&G’s part to show that premium moisturizers are available in outlets other than department stores.

The clamshell, which holds the pump-style container that serves as the primary package, is loaded into a windowed folding carton. “The clamshell showcases the pump-style package at the point of purchase,” says P&G senior engineer Ty Martin. Also, thanks to three separate undercuts designed into it, the clam-shell keeps the jar face properly oriented. Designing a part with undercuts large enough to keep the jar from shifting yet not so severe that they make mold release difficult was among the technical accomplishments that impressed SPE judges.

Creative Forming produces the award-winning clamshell 16-up. Jars are manually loaded into it and it’s then snap-fit shut.
