And the Grammy goes to...

In a ceremony recognizing technical achievement, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences awarded the 2003 Grammy for Best Recording Package to Ani DiFranco’s “Evolve” (Righteous Babe Records) and the Best Boxed or special Limited Edition Package to Miles Davis’ “The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions” (Sony Music Entertainment).

Pw 13105 Ani De Franco

Both packages are manufactured by Shorewood Packaging.

The “Evolve” package is composed of a four-panel Digipak® with pocket. The SBS pack, constructed of FiberMark’s Skivertex® Alloy® (a pre-embossed brush finish stock) laminated to a 12-pt black board with a matte black foil stamping, is decorated with an embossed image of a moth emerging through a metallic blue foreground. Closed, the CD case uses an outer SBS slipcase made of FiberMark’s Skivertex Alloy embossed with a brush finish. The artist’s name and track list are flat-foil stamped onto the material and a custom die cut is crafted to outline both the shape of the moth on the CD package and the letters of the album name. Ani DiFranco and Brian Grunert, a Buffalo, NY-based graphic designer, created the design concept.

“In its look and feel, this material is key in designing a package that expresses the unique qualities of Ani’s music,” Grunert says. “Not only is it eye-catching on the shelf, but it invites people to touch the package, pick it up, examine it, and hopefully take it home with them.”

The packaging for “The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions” combines paper, board, metal, and hand assembly. The 80-pt C1S board is laminated with a nylon matte film and a spot gloss UV coating to create the negative image. The package, designed to resemble a book, includes five pockets constructed of 12-pt SBS. The book block is placed into the 80-pt chipboard cover and a metal spine is applied.
