New Codex food standards

Codex, the international food body, adopted more than 20 new or amended food standards during its early July meeting in Rome with 120 countries participating.

The new standards covered a wide range of topics.

Codex adopted global guidelines for vitamin and mineral food supplements that recommended that labels contain information on maximum consumption levels. The guidelines say that supplements should only be used where food does not provide sufficient levels of vitamins and minerals.

One issue not resolved was intellectual property concerns over the labeling and composition of Parmesan cheese.
