No new kid on the block

Our small band of publishing entrepreneurs launched Packaging World in 1994.

We all had loads of experience in the packaging space, so we never thought of ourselves as new kids on the block. It was more like older kids with a new address in a well-known neighborhood.

One of those “kids” was Pat Reynolds. Along with the late Arnie Orloski, who was inducted into the Packaging Hall of Fame in 2003, Pat was the other half of our massive editorial team of two. What a great duo they were for many years.

By 2002, around the time we started hitting on all cylinders, it was Pat’s turn to take over as Editor. To say he brought a whole new energy to the publication would be an understatement.

Now, some 16 years later, we pass the editorial baton to Pat’s nephew Matt Reynolds. With this issue, Matt becomes the third Editor of Packaging World. Though he has only been with us since 2014, he brings an incredible skill set and a passion for packaging that can only mean one thing: Readers will remain in good editorial hands, especially with Senior Editor Anne Marie Mohan and Features Editor Jim Butschli continuing their insightful contributions. As he did in his previous role of Editorial Director on our Packaging & Processing OEM magazine (being relaunched this year as OEM magazine), Matt will continue to uphold the editorial standards set by Pat. And trust me when I say that the bar is high. Pat’s editorial integrity and experience have played a key role in making Packaging World the most respected packaging media brand in the world today.

We are truly excited as Matt takes the helm, carrying on a tradition of editorial excellence while building on the Reynolds legacy. Pat, I’m happy to say, will remain as Editor Emeritus and continue contributing his valuable experience, insight, and reporting on packaging developments. You’ll no doubt see him roaming the halls of PACK EXPO and other events.

As for Matt, he’s wasted no time establishing himself in the packaging community as a respected and trusted journalist. In his time with PMMI Media Group, Matt has also served as Director of Custom Media, Content, and Research, driving content decisions and providing valuable information to machinery and material suppliers alike. Matt’s experience with OEM magazine has enabled him to get a clearer understanding of what you, our readers, look for in a supplier. And with more than a decade of experience as a journalist and editor at publications including Baking Management and Modern Baking, he’s well positioned to build on an already sound knowledge base as he makes plant visits across all industries and around the world. He looks forward to getting to know as many of you as possible.

As part of a great organization like PMMI, the Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, our pledge to you as this editorial transition unfolds is to continue earning your respect with every issue of Packaging World as well as in the aisles of PACK EXPO events. In today’s digital world, it’s comforting to know that credible content and face-to-face events still thrive. Our collective experience and knowledge of the business of packaging will serve you well as we continue connecting you with companies providing packaging solutions (many of them profiled here in this issue).

Please join me in thanking Pat for all his years of raising the bar and in welcoming Matt as our new editorial leader. Matt’s inaugural Lead Off column is on page 13. By all means drop him a line. Once you get to know him, I think you’ll quickly see that he’s a bit like Pat and I were a couple of decades ago—at a new address but certainly not a new kid on the block.
