On October 13, organic yogurt producer Stonyfield Farm introduced the first form/fill/seal multipack yogurt container made from the bioplastic polylactic acid. While always an innovator, as well as an ardent supporter of the environment, Stonyfield did not leap into the new technology. Instead it comprehensively studied the use of PLA to ensure that it met with the company’s core beliefs.
In this 15-min podcast, Stonyfield’s vice president of natural resources, Nancy Hirshberg, shares how the company evaluated some of the issues related to PLA, including its use of corn as a feedstock, its safety for food contact, its environmental footprint, and its end-of-life potential.
