Co-Packer Connection database tops 1,000 facilities milestone

In early 2012, the Co-Packer Connection launched as an industry matchmaking resource for brands and manufacturers seeking contract packaging service providers. A news story on the launch noted that the service's database held 530 co-packing plants.

Today that number tops 1,000, a milestone reached with the addition of the Sylmar, CA, location of Build Rehabilitation Industries, which operates manufacturing, sourcing, contract packaging and logistics operations employing developmentally disabled adults. "We're always looking to serve companies beyond our local market who need a partner in Southern California, so we're glad to be in the database," says Bill Augustyn, director of operations.

Brands, too have found the service a boon, including one leading consumer brand user who said: "The response has been overwhelming! I have my work cut out responding to everyone."

The database now has more than 1,020 co-packer locations from more than 700 companies, “and the list keeps growing," says the service's administrator, Scott Thomas, director, North American contract packaging segment for Sealed Air shrink packaging and a 2013-14 board member of the Contract Packaging Association. How does the service work? What are the benefits?

Ryt-way, Hearthside merger creates $1-plus billion food/CPG contractor

In June, two contract service providers—manufacturer Hearthside Food Solutions and co-packer Ryt-way Industries—became one corporate entity under the ownership of Chicago-based private equity firm Wind Point Partners.

Wind Point acquired Hearthside in 2009 and Ryt-way in 2008. The company said in May that the merger would create a leading North American contract food and consumer packaged goods manufacturer-packager with more than $1 billion in sales and 19 manufacturing facilities across seven states.

Rich Scalise, CEO of Hearthside is now CEO of the combined entity. Ryt-Way CEO David Finch continues on the co-pack side and says the merger provides "a broader suite of capabilities" and "a one-stop shop for contract manufacturing.”

Since its founding in 1984, Wind Point has raised more than $2.8 billion in commitments, acquired more than 90 core "platform" companies and 160 "add-on" acquisitions. Current investments are ongoing, based on a $915 million fund closed in April 2009.
