The 2013 Salary Survey reveals skinny pay hikes + job security

Packaging pros saw a 3.49% average pay increase in 2012 compared to 2011, with job security and job prospects strong, according to respondents to the 2013 Institute of Packaging Professionals/Packaging World Salary Survey. The survey, developed in cooperation with Gros Executive Recruiters, a packaging sector executive recruiting firm, indicated that salaries have continued to rise, and now average $110,213 across 1,589 U.S. respondents—of which, 14% said they were contract packagers.

While compensation has increased, pay raises are marginal. The good news is that “Job security is way up, with 65 percent indicating their jobs are safe,” according to Dennis Gros, president, Gros Executive Recruiters, who added that 43% of respondents indicated they are ‘definitely not’ or ‘not likely’ to shop for a new job during 2013.

Supplement co-packer gets needed flexibility with new metal detector

Sun-Pac Manufacturing, a Tampa, FL-based co-manufacturer and packager of vitamins and dietary supplements, recently got a new job that created an urgent need for a new metal detector. Gary Henderson, president and CEO of Sun-Pac, explains how a new conveyorized, mobile metal detector is used to inspect tablets and capsules ranging from 120 cc to 4 lb in size across the 11 manufacturing lines and eight semi-automatic packaging lines at its 48,000 sq-ft production facility. Henderson uses the machine, a PowerPhasePRO metal detector from Mettler-Toledo Safeline, in his co-pack operation, which relies heavily on smaller 5,000- and 10,000-count bottle runs for smaller companies as well as new-product launches for larger ones.
