CPG leaders tell co-packers what it takes to win

How do leading brands find the right co-packers for their businesses? How do they evaluate, manage and maintain successful long-term relationships? Beyond good intentions, the devil’s in the details of meeting expectations, structuring contracts, sharing information and measuring results. These were among the topics leading luminaries from the consumer packaged goods (CPG) sector discussed at a town hall-style meeting at late February’s CPA 2013 Annual Meeting in Naples, FL.

The panel discussion, moderated by Jason Tham, CEO of contract packaging management systems provider Nulogy, featured three panelists:

• Mike McGee, senior contract packaging manager with Florida's Natural Growers

• Jon Heussner, director of operations/business with ConAgra Foods and

• Karl Kretschmer, recently retired senior supply chain manager for Mars Canada.

These industry veterans had just too much must-read advice to summarize in this Contract Packaging newsletter; the best advice we can offer you is:

Dial, Right Guard, Loctite under new supply chain management

In March, Dial soaps, Purex laundry detergents, Loctite adhesives and more of Henkel Consumer Goods’ North American brands are under new management with regard to logistics. As of March, Henkel Consumer Goods, parent of these and other consumer and industrial brands, outsourced its North American logistics division to Saddle Creek Logistics Services, Lakeland, FL. Saddle Creek, working out of Henkel’s consumer products headquarters in Scottsdale, AZ (pictured), now supports order management; shipping; KPI reporting; warehouse and transportation development; systems enhancements and supply chain network improvements and more.

Co-packer debuts ‘sneaky’ new bottle

Scheduled for an April launch, Butler, NJ-based Sneaky Pete’s debuts a new, custom bottle for an unusual all-natural oat beverage. First launched in a stock PET bottle about a year ago, a revamped design uses a 12-oz hourglass-shaped PET bottle with full-body shrink sleeve label. The innovative product is produced and packaged by contract manufacturer LiDestri Food & Beverage, based in Fairport, NY. The new design “more effectively communicates to consumers the true benefits of our revolutionary oat-based beverage,” the company says.

Glass-to-PET conversion’s smooth as glass

Old South Foods, Ann Arbor, MI, bottler and contract packager to restaurant and foodservice companies, converted its 16-oz barbecue sauce decanter from glass to hot-fill PET bottles for Big Show Foods’ John Boy and Billy’s Grillin’ Sauce brands. It’s the co-packer’s first use of PET containers—and reportedly the first commercial adoption of Amcor Rigid Plastics’ 16-oz hot-fill stock decanter. According to Greg Peckham, plant manager for Old South Foods, the new bottle’s benefits include lighter weight, reduced breakage and easier filling for “greater accuracy in meeting proper volume measurements” for greater productivity and output.
