How to ignore sales forecasts for more profitable packaging

With more retailers demanding customized package configurations for their consumers, the supply chain can get "very complicated, very quickly," says contract packager Kevin Hall, operating officer of Coregistics with decades of experience in the CPG supply chain, from The Clorox Company to Ryder Logistics.

At the recent 2012 Pack Expo in Chicago, Hall explained his approach to tackling wasteful practices. These include:

• Redistributing underselling products to over-selling regions,

• Reconfiguring non-performing products to meet configurations that are selling,

• Moving products out of the standard supply chain an into the ‘customization chain' if customization is outperforming, and

• Reverting customized product back into non-customized configurations, and reintroducing it to the standard supply chain.

The key to addressing these inefficiencies is to "eliminate early chain customization and differentiation, and keep the product in its most basic format by delaying final packaging steps." Custom display, kitting or other customization work should be done as late as possible to prevent redistributing, unpacking, reconfiguring and repacking.

Allegra trial pack delivers multiple packaging 'firsts'

For the first time, consumers can now purchase a trial pack of Allegra non-drowsy antihistamine allergy medication, a product that recently switched from prescription-only to over the counter.

The trial pack was launched nationwide in October by Chattem, the Chattanooga, TN-based consumer health care division of Sanofi US, and will be available on store shelves nationwide by the end of the year. The primary packaging is distinctive, particularly in that it is patterned (and shaped) after the Allegra “A” logo.

Healthcare Packaging talked with Nancy Limback, a Sanofi US package development group representative, to learn that the package development project “was a true team effort between internal and external vendor partners. For example, we worked closely with Witkoinc, a contract packager that also helped overcome challenges and meet the launch date.”

Trends in pharmaceutical packaging

As production manager at contract manufacturer Doppel Farmaceutici in Cortemaggiore, Italy, Sabina Gualazzini spends a lot of time thinking about packaging machinery and materials. She shared a few of her thoughts on the topic with Packaging World’s Pat Reynolds… and you…

Asked for the key capabilities see seeks in packaging machinery, Gualazzini replied:

“So many aspects must be taken into account when talking about packaging machines used in the pharmaceutical field. Flexibility is high on the list for a company like ours, where we produce not our own brands but many brands on a contract packaging basis. Ease of cleaning is also high on the list of requirements. But being able to change from one format to another quickly and easily is so terribly important.”

She also addressed the following questions:

• What should packaging machinery OEMs do differently?

• What about trends in packaging materials?

• Is there anything missing at the packaging exhibitions you attend?
