Disney characters encourage healthy eating...

By Gretchen Edelbrock, Special Projects Editor
We all know that kids love to eat food that comes in packaging decorated with their favorite characters. Now all sorts of Disney faves—from Mickey Mouse to Zac Efron—are decorating packages of the Disney Garden line of fruits and vegetables. The line has reported a 300% growth in Canada over last year. In the US, a High School Musical promotion increased the sale of bagged apples by nearly 50%. A cute, interactive website for kids (http://www.imagination-farms.com) fish tails on the back of the packaging—asking kids to "Find a clue on the back of Disney Garden packages," and asking them to enter a "Healthy Kid Clue" on the front page of the website. Packaging that ties in with the internet is a growing trend, not only for merchandising, but for capturing consumer data or explaining health, environmental or social issues.
