Examples include (shown clockwise from left) 10-kg Growmore brand from Scotts in the United Kingdom Bayer’s 10-kg Teldor fungicide Scotts’ 15-kg Substral and Bayer’s 2.5-kg Cuteryl for the Belgian market. The canisters for these products and the injection-molded lids are supplied by Weidenhammer Packaging (Hockenheim Germany) which has U.S. offices in Cincinnati OH.
All these fertilizers are hygroscopic which mandates a moisture barrier. That can be provided via a low-density polyethylene lamination within the container (Growmore and Substral) a wax coating or through the use of an internal bag. A company using the latter approach is Bayer based in Leverkusen Germany for its Cuteryl and Teldor granular fungicides. Teldor is set for launch this year by Bayer’s operations in France in 6- 10- and 20-kg canisters. An empty bag is inserted into the canister before manual filling. Bayer packaging development manager Heinz Treichel informs Packaging World that the canisters were chosen for safety recloseability and presentation. Pressure-sensitive tape secures the thermoformed polystyrene lids to provide tamper-evidence. Canisters are decorated with an outer label offset-printed in four to six colors laminated to the 60-pt chipboard substrate. (RL)
