Making calcium health claims?
The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) has asked the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to allow a health claim on dairy products stating that adequate calcium intake may reduce the risk of high blood pressure.
IDFA said there is significant scientific agreement on the relationship between getting enough calcium in the diet and a lower risk of hypertension. "Clearly informing consumers of another benefit associated with calcium could provide a needed impetus to increase consumption of this important mineral" said IDFA senior vice president Jerry Kozak.
