Nutrition labels for beer?
The camel's nose got under the tent when the Supreme Court overturned the federal law banning alcohol content on beer labels. Now, the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), a Washington, D.C.-based think tank, has petitioned the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to allow companies to make health claims on alcoholic beverage labels.
"There is significant evidence that moderate consumption of alcoholic beverages may reduce the risk of heart disease" said the Institute. Under CEI's petition brewers not only could tout the benefits of moderate consumption on beer labels they would have the option of defining "moderate" and recommending consumers seek the advice of a physician. It should make interesting reading for beer drinkers if the beer label contains both a message on the benefits of moderate drinking and the health warning required by federal law.
