Salsas in 48-oz bottle twin-packs

In February 2007, San Antonio Farms, San Antonio, TX, began club-store marketing of double-packs of salsas in 48-oz-volume, six-layer PP/EVOH barrier jugs with .015” wall thickness and 82-g empty-bottle weight. Shelf life of the bottled salsa is 12 months. Average retail price of the salsa twin-packs is between $5.00 and $6.00.

The jugs are custom-manufactured by Consolidated Container Co. ( and designed and distributed by major packaging developer and distributor TricorBraun (

The bottles feature a 63-mm finish with multiple thread starts (interrupted threads), similar to the type of finish used on glass bottles, and typically used for hot-fill products such as these salsas. Plastic twist closures with built-in induction seal liners--sealed by Enercon ( provide tamper evidence and barrier against moisture and oxygen. They’re supplied by Berry Plastics Corp. ( In-line capping equipment is from Pneumatic Scale Corp. (

Pressure-sensitive labels are supplied by Custom Printed Products (, and they are applied using equipment from Label-Aire, Inc. (

The jugs are shrink-wrapped together using 3-mil PVC shrink film supplied by Pack-Mark ( and shrink equipment manufactured by Axon Corp. ( San Antonio Farms also is planning to institute polypropylene carrier collars (called “dog bones”) supplied by PakTech ( for the salsa bottle packs.

Darryl Bilderback, director of material management for San Antonio Farms, reports, “initial reception to our salsa double-packs has been extremely positive. The new 48-ounce jug and twin-pack presentation will give our customers new marketing options.”
