The company continues that tradition with the addition of DoubleZip™ press-to-close packaging from Zip-Pak for larger portions of its Premium, Deli Shaved, Canadian Bacon, Bistro Favorites, and Sub Sandwich Kit products.The new DoubleZip packaging was introduced to Land O’Frost customers nationwide in August 2009. Stephen Williams, vp of marketing for Land O’Frost, comments, “We already had tremendous success with our product lines that incorporate resealable pouch packaging from Zip-Pak. The DoubleZip packaging for larger meat portions, particularly our one-pound Premium line, was an ideal way to decrease the carbon footprint of our packaging versus rigid packaging options.”Studies commissioned by Zip-Pak have indicated that pouches entail significantly lower energy consumption, solid waste generation, and greenhouse gas emissions than more conventional rigid plastic tub packaging. Williams says, “This satisfies our customers because they are more concerned than ever about the environmental impact of their purchasing decisions.”Rollstock gas-barrier film for the new pouches is made from 48-gauge PET/.003 EVA/EVOH. The film is supplied and printed by Bemis/Curwood and Graphic Packaging. The deli meat pouches are formed, filled, and sealed by equipment from Multivac.
The combination of the barrier film and the zipper seals reduces exposure to oxygen and other environmental contaminants, maximizing product freshness. Williams notes, “After opening, there is no guesswork involved in resealing the unused meat. The consumer can feel the seal securely reclose every time. Since incorporating the DoubleZip, we have seen tremendous consumer interest, and we expect this to further build brand loyalty for Land O’Frost.”
