Baking soda shake up
The Arm & Hammer Div. of Church & Dwight now offers its all-natural baking soda in a waterproof “sink-side” container that is an alternative to its venerable 59¢ paperboard “Yellow Box.” The 12-oz white pigmented high-density polyethylene container, which keeps water out, allows consumers to keep baking soda closer to the sink.
“This is a convenience-driven package,” says Melissa Martin, product manager at the Princeton, NJ, firm. “While baking soda has many uses around the kitchen and bathroom, the box doesn’t hold up well when kept sink-side, so a plastic container was needed. And the shaker top allows the product to flow nicely out of the package.” The contract packaged product has been reformulated from the 1-lb boxed version to make it more free flowing.Learn about packaging innovation at The Packaging Conference in Orlando, February 3-5, 2014
Containing 25% post-consumer recycled content, the three-layer bottle is blow-molded by Silgan Plastics (Fairfield, OH) with distinctive arches in the shoulder. The label, from Mail-Well (Englewood, CO), is a 2-mil white polypropylene laminated to a 1/2-mil clear OPP that is reverse-printed flexo in seven colors. A tamper-evident band, also from Mail-Well, conceals the shaker top holes.
