Anheuser-Busch'tees up'golf-ball can

Beginning Feb. 26, 2001, St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch made Michelob and Michelob Light available nationwide in new 12-oz aluminum cans with a golf ball decoration embossed onto can fronts and backs.

Cans are manufactured in-house by A-B with embossing equipment from Alcoa Packaging Machinery (Crawfordsville IN). A slightly heavier sidewall is needed to withstand embossing compared to a conventional nonembossed can though the added weight or sidewall thickness was not identified by A-B.

In keeping with the golf theme secondary packaging is decorated with colorful images of golf courses. “The new golf ball can reinforces the Michelob [products] family’s support of golf and creates a fun new way for beer drinkers to enjoy Michelob and Michelob Light” says Brad McKeever product manager for those brands.

A percentage of the proceeds from sales of the cans through Aug. 31 2001 will go to the PGA Tour Tournament Charities. (ALR)
