Next-generation gravure printing

Incorporating a unique separation process, the printing technology provides a satin look along with three-dimensional depth on metal-containing substrates. The separation process can deliver a range of graphic effects from silky transitions to pseudo-holographic color shifts. Covering the metal surface with various amounts of KromaSilk inks determines the effect level of the KromaSilk ink coming through the subsequent layers of ink. The strength of the color depends on the angle when viewing, much like the tilting of a holographic image, but the KromaSilk print is softer than holographic images.

WellPet New Products and Brand Strategy Manager Catherine McCarthy says, “KromaSilk is valuable when you have a strong, layered design in which many elements are interacting. Combined with foil and various screen values, the KromaSilk printing process creates subtle variations in tone that give the packaging design a shimmering, multi-dimensional, textured effect.

“We introduced the packaging in March 2008, and have enjoyed great success with strong sales growth. The printing reinforces the brand and provides a colorful, friendly, premium image.”
