Packaging of computer monitors has changed dramatically at Palo Alto, CA-based Hewlett-Packard. By replacing expanded polystyrene end caps with suspension packaging made of kraft paper and plastic film, H-P has reduced material costs by 15.5%.
Storage costs are down too while gains in packaging source reduction are impressive. Where the firm used to keep 160 pallets of EPS to ship a given number of monitors it now keeps five pallets of knocked-down suspension packaging material. The new protective packaging used by H-P is Sealed Air’s (Saddle Brook NJ) Korrvu® material. It consists of top and bottom frames that suspend and immobilize the monitors throughout transit. Each frame is made of 275#-test B/C-flute double-wall corrugated with a 5-mil “engineered elastomeric film” stretched across a die-cut opening. When the monitor is placed face down into the bottom frame the elastomeric polymer stretches and molds around the monitor. H-P puts the top Korrvu frame on and insert the entire ensemble into a 350#-test B/C-flute double-wall corrugated shipper that is taped shut. Throughout transit the monitor is suspended between the two Korrvu frames.H-P packaging engineer Suzanne Keeler says she especially likes the fact that 19 different monitor variations fit into the same pair of Korrvu frames.H-P’s package was recently named a winner in the electronics category of the 2001 AmeriStar Awards competition sponsored by the Institute of Packaging Professionals (Naperville IL).
