'Flexible can' stands tall
DuPont Awards’ 19th editionThe 19th annual DuPont Awards Competition once again shines the spotlight on innovation in packaging. From 135 entries, 26 packs received awards.
“The launch of Turmiks was only meant for a limited edition, but it was such a success that our customers asked for it to be a permanent product. Norwegians are pretty much a traveling people and they take the product on their regular Sunday trip to the woods, the sea, or to the mountains,” says Ronne.
Early last year, market leader KiMs Norge AS introduced a flexible stand-up ‘FlexCan’ from Amcor Flexibles (www.amcor.com) that’s building sales for the company’s nuts, potato chips, and specialty snacks. The package won a Silver Award from the DuPont judges.“We had to put our effort into packaging that would differentiate us from our competitors,” explains Stein Ronne, R&D and QA manager for KiMs Norge, an Oslo-based company within the Orkla Group. Learn about packaging innovation at The Packaging Conference in Orlando, February 3-5, 2014After attending a packaging conference in Gothenburg, Sweden, Ronne says, “we learned of the resealable standing bag from Amcor.” In January, 2005, KiMs Norge introduced 350-g Polly Peanotter and 300-g Polly Turmiks nuts into the FlexCan.Amcor’s FlexCan was developed by Amcor Flexibles in partnership with German packaging machine manufacturer Rovema (KiMs’ FlexCan measures approximately 140-mm H and W x 40-mm deep. The structure, a solventless adhesive lamination, includes .79-mil oriented polypropylene/.47-mil metallized PET/2.36-mil PE/foil. The OPP and PE films provide a tight lap seal, and the metallized PET provides oxygen barrier. That’s especially important since the nuts are nitrogen-flushed to prevent oxidation.KiMs packs the products into the FlexCans at its facility in Skreia, Norway. Testing of the Amcor/Rovema project for KiMs began in late 2004 at Amcor facilities in Denmark and the United Kingdom. KiMs purchased two Rovema VPI260 form/fill/seal machines for the products.“Amcor FlexCan is the perfect consumer-friendly solution for this kind of product since its wide opening makes it easy to help yourself to handfuls of nuts directly from the pack or pour some of the contents into a bowl,” says Ronne. “It can be resealed to keep the product fresh and it stands up in the cupboard to ensure the nuts don’t spill out during storage after opening.”The FlexCans are reverse-printed gravure in six to eight colors, depending on the product, by Amcor Flexibles Drammen in Norway on a wide-web Cerutti (
