Flexible approach to applying lipstick (sidebar)
ColorKiss by Orlandi is a unique use of flexible packaging to hold a single application of lipstick. Developed by Dale Beal, Orlandi vice president of marketing, it uses an exclusive license for the inventor’s patented system.
ColorKiss by Orlandi employs a combination of paper and plastic substrates that are “manipulated” by Orlandi before the lipstick is applied and covered with a heat-sealed PET film cover.
The materials are supplied in rollstock form by American Packaging Corp. The package won a Silver Award.
The 8-mil-thick base material is a bleached paper laminated to PET film on both sides using an ethylene copolymer. Later the 3-mil protective film cover is heat-sealed to the base material. A peelable seal allows easy opening. The materials receive treatments both for flexo printing and for sealing.
In a consumer’s hands the cover is peeled off and discarded. It peels cleanly because embossed areas in the base layer have kept the lipstick from contact with the cover. The base layer with lipstick is then bent back in half via a score line so there’s a top and bottom of lipstick. The consumer slips this between her lips to apply the lipstick.
“The key to this package is the embossing that shows clearly as dots through the front of the package” says Orlandi’s Beal. “It keeps the front film seal from contacting the lipstick so there’s no mess. The other key is that we apply the lipstick to the base sheet in an amorphous state so that it flows around the embossed areas.”
Orlandi uses a series of proprietary machines to create this pack says Beal. “We can produce in very high volumes” he adds. One of Orlandi’s first applications is with Victoria’s Secret Beauty where the company will be applying an individual ColorKiss directly onto catalog sheets. However says Beal the company will also offer ColorKiss in blister packs or folding cartons. “We think one of the early applications will be in lipsticks for young women especially the teenaged market” he says. —AO
