Stand-up pouch is clearly nutty

Health foods maker GeniSoy Products Co., Fairfield, CA, debuted a new line of soy nut-based Trail Mix in October 2002, “in a pouch where consumers actually see the product,” says marketing manager Sabrina Wootton.

The company’s other offerings—and those from its competitors—are packed in opaque pouches.

Supplied in roll form by Maxim FlexPac the 3.7-mil pouch material is polyvinylidene chloride-coated polyester/reverse-printed gravure in eight-colors/adhesive/metallocene LLDPE.

The contents are visible through the pouch front and back along the unprinted lower portion. “We wanted a high clarity material with a good barrier to preserve the product freshness” says Wootton. “Retailers are excited about the resealable packaging” she adds referring to the extended flange-style #113 LDPE zipper reclosure from Presto Products.

The zipper is applied in-line on horizontal form/fill/seal machinery at a rate of 60 pouches/min says Wootton.

The UPC code appears on the bottom gusset where it is easy to scan. That location was especially helpful when the company expanded the products into Canada in Spring ’03 with packs printed in English and French. “The added bilingual verbiage was a challenge it really filled up the package with copy” she says. “It was nice having the space available on the back ‘window’ that is usually used by the UPC.” The products retail for $2.79. —RL
