The lamination of 50-ga polyester/1-mil aluminum foil/2 mils of low-density polyethylene is produced by Alcan Packaging Singen.

The product is unique in that the 500-mg dose is in the form of dry soluble granules that can be taken directly in the mouth without water for fast assimilation. Bayer’s Web site says the granules are flavored to taste like cola and orange. The product is highly hygroscopic and requires a hygienic package so the barrier properties were critical the judges noted. Plus it’s user-friendly and it uses a minimum of packaging material. The product is packed by the Schorndorf Germany plant of Cardinal Health Contract Services.

A “trophy” winner in the EAFA competition is a stand-up reclosable pouch for expresso coffee “pods” sold by Swiss supermarket chain Migros. The Golden Beans pack judges said represent “an outstanding combination of product protection user convenience and graphic presentation.”

To preserve the sensitive aromatic fresh coffee product the lamination employs a barrier layer of 0.33-mils aluminum foil captured between the outer 0.5-mil polyester and a 3-mil PE inner layer. Converted by Wipf AG the polyester is reverse-printed by gravure in six colors. A laser-etched score line permits easy tear opening and an integral zipper is provided for reclosing. —AO
