Oregon law amended

The Oregon House and Senate have approved amendments to the state's Rigid Plastic Container Law. Food containers will be exempt from the law, thanks to a successful amendment that was supported by the Oregon Food Processors.

Cups and possibly other foodservice containers were inadvertently excluded from the exemption until the Foodservice & Packaging Institute (FPI) stepped in to correct the error. Another amendment provides an enforcement delay of one full year if the recycling rate drops below 25%. It also delays enforcement of the law until January 1 1998 and reduces civil penalties for violations. A third amendment exempts containers holding products regulated under the Federal Insecticide Fungicide and Rodenticide Act and those used to ship hazardous materials.
